    CHRIS POWELL BIOGRAPHY

Chris was born in Manchester in 1971. At the age of 2 years his parents emigrated to live in Christchurch N.Z. where he first became exposed to organ music as a pre-schooler at Cathedral Grammar School. A return to England in 1977 saw him further his musical activities both as a chorister and also with piano and subsequently electronic organ lessons. By the age of 16 he was already giving concerts as well as playing for dancing around East Lancashire & West Yorkshire. Growing up in North West England, it was not surprising that it wasn’t long before the family made an outing to the world famous Blackpool Tower. Upon entering the hallowed Ballroom & hearing the Wurlitzer Chris remarked to his parents that he ‘would play in here some day’….Although met with some wry laughter at the time, he did indeed do this. At the age of 18 he was successfully auditioned to join the team of organists as a relief player in the winter of 1990. A happy 5 year connection ensued, playing both the Wurlitzer & also electronics within the complex. 1994 saw an invitation to return to New Zealand to play a series of theatre & electronic organ concerts in the land that was once called home. The 4 week sell out tour saw him performing to capacity crowds from Dunedin through to Auckland. Indeed to date he has made some 12 visits to New Zealand & 6 to Australia to perform shows. In 2000 he was invited by the Roland Corporation to tour with one of their flagship Atelier organ products. The current model which suits his exciting & fast pace show presentation is the model he will play at Drury Theatre plus the Allen Theatre Organ (updated version of the Wurlitzer). We do hope you are able to join us on this occasion.

North Canterbury Classic Tour.  Start venue is now not New Brighton as has been since 2005, but at our co-sponsor, John Stewart’s business premises, Russley Portables.  656 Wairakei Road, Russley, next to Stewart’s Classic Collection (south side).

We try to alternate the route each year, North/South of the Waimak.  In 2013 we travelled North, with the lunch break at Iron Ridge Quarry, between the back country of Amberley and Mason’s Flat/Hawarden.  So, for 2014 we travel South of the Waimakariri River.  There are other changes too, but the details will be notified in the New Year.

Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains Classic Car Rally 4th May 2014
You are asked to keep this date free as the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains are, once again, organising our annual Classic car run. This event is part of the Ashburton Wheels Week festivities.
This is the 22nd running of this hugely popular event and we ask you for your participation. Entry fee will be $20/car with all profits going to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The event will start at the Ashburton Showgrounds at 10.15am and will finish in the Methven area approximately 4 hours later.
You will be given instructions — like a car trial, and you will able to participate in the annual Street parade, should you wish, or simply carry on the designated route to finish in Methven. There will be no shingle roads and the instructions will be very straight forward.
There will be prizes for various vehicles that will be chosen by our independent judges, Roger Hart and Bernard Egan, two well known identities in the Mid Canterbury area and have had many years experience of classic cars. They will also pick a concours d'Elegance winner.
We ask all Car Clubs to make their members aware of this fun, low key event in your club bulletins or notice board.

    Barrhill Village

Meet at Princess Margaret Hospital car park at 1 pm Going somewhere different. Barrhill Village, historical village and well worth a visit. On wet or dry. (we have a contingency plan) Club provides afternoon tea. Organiser Bill and Cynthia Cockram

Barrhill Village, apparently built with a view that the railway was going through the area but it didn’t (hope I have that right) Barrhill is a charming village with historic buildings and tree lined avenues. In its heyday the village housed not only families of Corwar Estate workers, but also the commercial premises of a baker, blacksmith, bricklayer, post office keeper, hotelier and gardener. The 1877 village plan featured 28 sections marked around a central market square. Elms, oaks, limes and sycamores were planted, along with an avenue of birches on the east and oaks on the west. It was not until an aerial photo was taken in 1975 that locals realised the central oak trees were planted in the shape of three interlocking circles suggesting the symbol of the Trinity, with St John’s church as the focal point.

Starting from John Stewart’s Hi-Tech Building Systems at 656 Wairakei Road, Russley (Next to his Bel Air Gardens and Classic Car Museum).  This year, owing to the shorter ks, we can afford to start 30 minutes or so later.  First classic away at 10am rather than 9.15/9.30 time slot as in previous years.

Many roads never previously travelled and a variety too.  A two-lap drive-through at a new over 50’s village is one new feature.  Here, I am told, residents are planning to dress-up in period costume! (Looking forward to that).  A pleasant lunch venue we have not used ever before, on the NCCT or the Henry Ford Memorial rally.  And it has on site a new coffee and real fruit ice-cream shop!  (They have donated ten $5 vouchers which we will give out on ‘lucky number’ route sheets). Finish venue is a country café with plenty of room, plus a display we will keep under wraps in the meantime.  I have The Breeze FM radio station supporting us now (via James Daniels, an ex North Beach Primary School student as was I) so our attending numbers could increase substantially!  Maybe our vehicle numbers could exceed 200 once again.   Last time was in 2007 when we had 252!

Please mark March 22 down on your calendar NOW

Wheels Week 2015 will be for the period 2 May 2015 to 17 May 2015 inclusive, preceded by the special church service at St. Andrews Church on 26 April 2015 commencing at 10.00 am.

The 2015 Wheels Week event will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Wheels Week and needless to say it will be bigger and better than ever. Some of the events have been re-organised and some of them have been relocated.  Participants in the various events have shown a lot of enthusiasm because of this landmark year.

Motorcycle interests in the district are celebrating their 100th year anniversary and their own specially arranged events will form part of the Wheels Week celebrations.

    THE CHARITY:

The charity to be supported by Wheels Week 2015 will once again be the Canterbury Westland Air Rescue Trust – known as the Westpac Helicopter. However the Trust supports not only the helicopter but also its medical and other equipment consumables which are very extensive and expensive.

The reason that we support this charity is that anyone with wheels could be and have been a likely user of its services. All of the net proceeds from Wheels Week go to this cause.

    FEATURE EVENING GUEST SPEAKER;

One of the main features of Wheels Week events in the past has been the Heartland Guest Speaker Evening. This year we have been fortunate enough to secure Steve Williams as our speaker.

Because of the already apparent demand from the public to be able to attend this evening the venue will be the Events Centre which will also handle all of the ticketing needs through TicketDirect.

The evening will also include finger food and an opportunity to mix and mingle after Steve does his speaking.

Obviously the committee is really pleased to secure this speaker. The relevance to Wheels Week is that Steve is a high profile speedway driver and organiser but clearly there will also be a lot of interest from golfers.

BIG TOYS FOR BIG BOYS EVENT:

For a number of reasons this event has been re-located for 2015. In the past the Ashburton District Council has bent over backwards to help us with the location at the north east Business Park but any wet weather even prior to the event put it at risk. Nevertheless the committee is very grateful to the council for their assistance.

This year the event will be held at the Ashburton Airport entering through the Speedway Circuit gates. It will include demonstrations of equipment on the Speedway track which is totally secured from the public and will also give access to the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

We expect that this will be a huge event (this is another reason for re-locating) and it will not have to be put off if the weather turns sour.

A per head gate charge will apply and there will be ample parking.

    THE FINISHING BIT:

The Big Toys for Big Boys event has traditionally been the last event of past Wheels Weeks. This year Aeroview at 39 Morris Road and run by Peter and Larraine McQuarters will be available for a “Natter and Noggin” from 4.00 pm to put that finishing touch on the big day.

This year the rally will start from the Ashburton Show Grounds at 10:15 am and will
finish at “Middle Rock Station” on the Coleridge road, on the north side of the Rakaia River in
the shadows of Mt – Hutt. This event is part of the Ashburton Wheels Week festivities.
    This will be the 23

running of this hugely popular event and we ask you to publish this in your
    magazines and on your websites.
Entry fee will again be $20.00 and the event will not include any shingle roads.
The owners of Middle Rock Station, Lyn and Bruce Nell have kindly offered to open their
property to participants of the car rally.
The station carries over 7000 fine wool sheep producing wool for the apparel trade as well as
    export lambs.
Lunch will be available for those who wish to buy, in the buildings area which includes a
beautifully kept homestead and garden which you will be invited to wander around as
    highlighted on www.middlerock.co.nz

Bring a picnic lunch and wander about the cars and memorabilia sheds. After the AGM the committee will shout afternoon tea. On wet or fine! The Ellesmere Vintage Fair is hosted by the Ellesmere Vintage Club Inc, raising funds for Abbeyfield Ellesmere.
On show will be vintage and classic tractors by the hundreds, dating from the early 1900’s, up to present day machines. A popular drawcard will be the forerunners to the tractor, the steam traction engine. We hope to have at least a dozen of these machines in attendance and will put on working displays including threshing and heavy haulage. Veteran, vintage and classic cars and trucks from the local area and further afield will come together at the Leeston Showgrounds, a petrol head’s dream.
A variety of food and craft stalls will create a market atmosphere along with children's entertainment.
Abbeyfield Ellesmere is a 100% community owned housing complex for those who are in between the independence levels of living at home independently and going into a care facility.
After 8 years of planning by local dedicated volunteers, construction finally began in 2016. The funds we are raising will go towards the fitting out of the rooms, readying them for our local elderly residents.

You are asked to keep this date free as the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains are once again organising our annual Classic car run. This event is part of the Ashburton Wheels Week festivities, following the swap meet to be held the previous day.

This is the 25th running of this hugely popular event and we ask you for your participation. Entry fee will be $20/car with profits going to a local organisation (yet to be confirmed.) The event will start at the Ashburton Showground’s at 10.15am and will finish in the Hinds area approximately 4 hours later. Registrations will be from 8.30am.

You will be given instructions like a car trial, and carry on the designated route to finish. There will be no shingle roads and the instructions will be very straight forward.

There will be prizes for various vehicles that will be chosen by our independent judges, Roger Hart and Bernard Egan, two very well known identities in the Mid Canterbury area who have had many years experience of classic cars. They will also pick a concours d’Elegance winner.

As this is the 25th Anniversary of this event we are returning to the original venue “Coldstream”, which was hosted by Sue and the Late Joe Studholme. We are fortunate that the next generation Annie & Alistair Studholme have agreed to offer their property for this Anniversary year.

We ask all Car Clubs to make their members aware of this fun low key event in your club bulletins or notice board.
